WHAT MAKES FOR A SUCCESSFUL CRITERION A?
Evidence of a thorough investigation that has led to and informed the problem
Authentic research is completed and data is collected to support the problem
Client interviews and interactions are used to form the brief and specification
The problem and brief are supported by images, charts, and surveys
Specification items are numbered, prioritised and itemised
Specification items are justified and measurable
WHAT SHOULD SECTION A INCLUDE?
- CLIENT INTERVIEW
Survey your client/end user to find out the following:
- Their wants and needs
- The extent of the problem
- Their proposed solution(s)Create a client profile that evaluates the client/end user and their needs
2. PRIMARY RESEARCH
Observe the problem and record information through images, video and statistical data collection (where appropriate)
Evaluate existing products and solutions
Interview additional end users and secondary markets to assess their wants and needs
3. SECONDARY RESEARCH
Look to the internet and resource books for supportive information that cannot be found through primary research. This could be:
- Global & statistical data
- Similar problems outside on the one highlighted
- Additional product research
- Background information to better understand the problem and/or situation
4. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Cultural connection (where possible)
Need explained (primary and secondary)
Potential impacts of a solution explained
Reference to or evidence of researching and surveying
Link to an existing source of information
Use images to support statement (ideally your own)
Evidence of primary and secondary research (more primary where possible)
Use of client/user interviews to help guide and justify the problem
5. DESIGN BRIEF
Goal and aims explained
How you plan to achieve goal
State what the end outcome should be
State the intended end user
State scale of production
6. DESIGN SPECIFICATION
Itemised by group and number (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc)
Follows ACCESS FMM
Testing method for how the success of each will be judged
Prioritised ('Must, should could' or numerical)
Each item is specific. For example, exacting sizes, not just 'must not be too big"
Each item is justified by research or client/user data and/or feedback
Reflects client interaction, wants and needs as well as research completed
